How to use
- Enter loan amount: The principal in NPR, e.g. Rs. 50,00,000 for a Kathmandu apartment down-payment balance.
- Enter annual interest rate: Banks in Nepal currently quote roughly 8–13% for home loans; use your offer letter rate.
- Choose tenure: Switch between years and months. Longer tenure lowers EMI but raises total interest sharply.
- Compare: Try 15 vs 20 vs 25 years and watch total interest — then check affordability with the Loan Eligibility calculator.
Formula
EMI = P × r × (1+r)^n / ((1+r)^n − 1), where r is monthly rate and n is months (reducing-balance method banks use)
Example
Rs. 50,00,000 at 10% for 20 years: monthly EMI is about Rs. 48,251, total interest about Rs. 65,80,000 — you repay roughly Rs. 1.16 crore.
Good to know
Nepali banks use the reducing-balance method and quote rates per annum. Processing fees (0.5–1%), insurance and prepayment charges are extra and not in EMI.
FAQs
How is EMI calculated in Nepal?
With the reducing-balance formula: EMI = P × r × (1+r)^n / ((1+r)^n − 1). Interest is charged only on the outstanding principal each month, which is why early payments are mostly interest.
What loan details do I need?
Just three: principal (NPR), annual interest rate, and tenure in years or months. Optional: processing fee and insurance for the true upfront cost.
Should I choose a longer tenure for lower EMI?
Only if cash flow demands it. A 25-year term can nearly double total interest versus 15 years. Pick the shortest EMI you can comfortably pay — generally under 40–50% of monthly income.
Is this calculator accurate?
Yes for standard reducing-balance loans (home, car, personal). It matches bank math to the rupee; final sanctioned EMI may differ by rounding, disbursement date or fees.
