How to fill the amount-in-words line on a cheque
- Enter the numeric amount above (with paisa if any).
- Open the Cheque tab — both language versions appear with मात्र / Only already added.
- Copy the text and write it exactly on the cheque's words line, starting as close to the left edge as practical.
- Match the figure box: if words say बाह्र लाख पचास हजार मात्र, figures must read Rs. 12,50,000.
Why the wording matters
Legally, the amount-in-words takes precedence over figures when they disagree — which is why banks scrutinize this line. Ending with मात्र/Only prevents words being appended after it, and starting near the left edge prevents words being inserted before it. Avoid overwriting; if you make a mistake, cancel the cheque and start a new one.
Example cheque wordings
- Rs. 25,000 → रुपैयाँ पच्चीस हजार मात्र / Rupees Twenty-Five Thousand Only
- Rs. 5,40,500 → रुपैयाँ पाँच लाख चालीस हजार पाँच सय मात्र / Rupees Five Lakh Forty Thousand Five Hundred Only
- Rs. 9,800.25 → रुपैयाँ नौ हजार आठ सय र पच्चीस पैसा मात्र / Rupees Nine Thousand Eight Hundred and Twenty-Five Paisa Only*
*Paisa conventions vary slightly by bank — many prefer writing paisa in figures only.
