What is VAT?
VAT (Value Added Tax) is a consumption tax charged at each stage of producing and selling goods or services — ultimately paid by the final consumer. In Nepal it applies to most products and services, and businesses registered under VAT collect it on behalf of the Inland Revenue Department. When you see a restaurant bill or an invoice with a separate tax line, that line is usually VAT.
Nepal's VAT rate
This tool is configured with 13% as the default standard rate — the long-standing standard rate in Nepal per the Inland Revenue Department (ird.gov.np). Some goods and services carry different rates or exemptions, so treat 13% as a starting point rather than a legal certainty for every transaction. The rate field above is editable, so any special rate can be entered directly. If the official standard rate ever changes, updating the tool's single configuration value keeps everything accurate.
How to calculate VAT (adding VAT)
Multiply the pre-VAT amount by the rate:Rs. 10,000 × 13% = Rs. 1,300 VAT
Then add it back:Rs. 10,000 + Rs. 1,300 = Rs. 11,300 total
How to remove VAT (reverse VAT)
When a price already includes VAT, divide by (1 + rate ÷ 100):Rs. 11,300 ÷ 1.13 = Rs. 10,000 before VAT
The VAT amount is the difference: Rs. 11,300 − Rs. 10,000 = Rs. 1,300. A common mistake is subtracting 13% of Rs. 11,300 (= Rs. 9,831), which gives the wrong pre-VAT price. For any other rate, divide by 1 + rate ÷ 100 — e.g. ÷ 1.05 for 5%, ÷ 1.15 for 15%.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the VAT rate in Nepal?
This calculator uses 13% as the standard rate — the long-standing standard rate set by Nepal's Inland Revenue Department (ird.gov.np). The rate is configurable in this tool, so if it changes you can simply type the new percentage. Always confirm the applicable rate for your transaction with the IRD or your tax advisor.
How do I calculate 13% VAT?
Multiply the price by 0.13. For example: Rs. 10,000 × 13% = Rs. 1,300 VAT, so the total including VAT is Rs. 10,000 + Rs. 1,300 = Rs. 11,300.
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the VAT-inclusive price by 1 plus the rate: Rs. 11,300 ÷ 1.13 = Rs. 10,000 before VAT, making the VAT amount Rs. 1,300. Do not subtract 13% directly — that understates the pre-VAT price. For any other rate, divide by 1 + rate ÷ 100.
Is VAT included in the displayed price?
It depends on the seller and product type. In Nepal, most retail prices are quoted VAT-inclusive, while business invoices often show the pre-VAT amount and add VAT separately. A VAT-inclusive price already contains VAT; a VAT-exclusive price does not. To work backwards from an inclusive price, divide by 1 plus the rate (e.g. ÷ 1.13).
How much VAT is on Rs. 10,000?
At the 13% standard rate: Rs. 10,000 × 13% = Rs. 1,300, giving a total of Rs. 11,300. Enter it above to check with any rate or amount.
